Staff Recycling Begins at the Library!

The Green Committee at the Hussey-Mayfield Library is excited to announce that we started staff recycling this week. Many on the staff have carried cardboard, newspapers, magazines, and lunch plastics home to recycle. After learning about Ray's Single Stream Recycling available to the Library we realized it would be easy to to implement in our offices. We received administrative support and have recruited volunteers to take part in the recycling program and posted the "do's and don't" about what to put in the bins.

We filled the bin the first day! The Library "reuses, renews, and recycles" every day. Here are some of the ways we are "Going Green" at the Library.

• Books and materials circulate throughout the Zionsville community and the Evergreen Indiana catalog system.


• Items donated and retired from the Libary are sold at the Friends of the Library book sale several times a year.


• Items are cleaned and repaired to increase circulation.


• Papers and packaging are reused whenever possible then recycled.


• Electricity is conserved by adjusting the heating and cooling system.


• Automated lights and computer use helps conserve electricity.


• Cellphones are collected for the "Cell Phone for Soldiers" program.


• A recycling information center is displayed in the Adult Non-Fiction area.


• Many of the children's crafts are created from recycled items.


• Children are encouraged to use their own energy to push the doors open and walk up stairs.

We will continue to add to our "Going Green" list. If you need help getting a program started at your work place, visit with us at our booth at the Z'GreenFest on April 17th, and we will share our experience.
